As we were tipped by some users (thanks!!) that BETA 2 of our Program lets some “breadcrumbs” on the users’s PCs, I present you a simple fix for this problem:
Note: There is a file embedded within this post, please visit this post to download the file.

Execute the .reg file with administrator privileges and re-check your right-click menu, the shortcut should be away now.

I remember when I joined the BetterExplorer team about 8-ish months ago. I worked with Dimitar Tsenev, the creator of BetterExplorer, and we talked to each other over e-mail at first, and then through Facebook. As we worked on BetterExplorer, I began seeing comments from users who enjoyed our product, and seeing every single positive note just brought a smile to my face. One such user was Sebastien, and he loved BetterExplorer so much that he began to help us by offering feature requests, bug reports, and all kinds of help. I honestly must say we wouldn’t be where we are now without him.

In time, Sebastien convinced us to move over to GitHub, and on GitHub we met new people. One such person was goes by the name Micheal Hardy. He’s been around for years, that “unnamed” person making “backspaceware”, and he made such a clone of BetterExplorer… twice. (You’ll also find programs he “made”, cloning video games, Paint.Net, Firefox, and D-FEND for DOSbox, and that’s just the start.)

Another person we met on GitHub is Markus. He offered us something amazing: our own website. That website is what you see here now, and it’s because of Markus that we have it. Around this time, Sebastien convinced Dimitar and myself to move over to Skype, so the four of us, Dimitar, Markus, Sebastien, and myself, now regularly talk to each other over Skype. A lot of our talk is about business, which makes sense, but I also enjoy those moments where we also talk about other things, and it helps us as a team bond and work together more. These are people I’d enjoy calling my friends, and together, we make BetterExplorer.

Markus helped us in a lot of ways, especially with handling Micheal Hardy, and getting BetterExplorer out into the public, and as well, he offers a lot of help with the website. It amazes me how knowledgeable he is about networking and running a website, and he’s younger than me! Again, BetterExplorer wouldn’t be where it is without him.

Markus, Sebastien, and myself sometimes get into a few arguments over things (sometimes when Sebastien and Markus argue, either or both come running to me to help resolve the issue) but I believe it only helps BetterExplorer, since it can be shaped by people with different viewpoints and ideas. The saying “two heads are better than one” applies here… except it’s four heads.

So, I want to offer my thanks to Sebastien and Markus for the work they’ve done so far. They’ve helped out tremendously. Again, we honestly would not be where we are today without them both. I hope they will continue to help us for a long time to come!

I also want to thank Dimitar himself, for creating BetterExplorer in the first place, and then allowing me to join in. I honestly was a bit nervous about joining the project at first, but after a bit of conversing with Dimitar, I warmed up to him and to BetterExplorer itself. He’s an actual computer programmer with a lot of experience, so the chance to work alongside someone like that really makes me happy.

I also want to thank the various people who have helped out with making translations for BetterExplorer. As you might or might not know, I am the one that manages the translations for BetterExplorer, and I take every chance I get to thank those people for helping out. It’s great to see BetterExplorer available in so many languages.

Finally, I want to thank the public, the people who download and use BetterExplorer, the people who come back and write to us positive comments, the people who offer their suggestions and bug reports, the people who… give BetterExplorer a shot. We do our best to make BetterExplorer the way it is, and we love it when we get positive feedback. We hope that the public will continue to be there for us. Beta 1 had 17 119 downloads. I’m looking forward to seeing what Beta 2 will get, seeing how improved it is.

So, thank you to all of you, again. We’ve had a lot of success so far, and we’re looking forward to what the future will bring us.

It finally was released, and on Christmas Eve of all days. (If you’re in the Christian faith.)

We’re all very excited about Beta 2. It offered a lot of features that now puts BetterExplorer on par with other explorer replacements, and also just makes it that much easier to use. If you haven’t taken a look, or if you have Beta 1, I highly suggest giving Beta 2 a try. (As always, though, we’re still using the “Beta” label, since there’s still some kinks to work out.)

Some of the features I’m excited about includes support for multiple windows (a highly requested feature), improvements to the tab bar (I’d like to say we’ve exceeded expectations), and the Folder/Drive Size Chart feature (since a Folder Size column is an impossibility). Of course, there’s a lot more features than just that. If you’re curious, you can take a look at our changelog.

In the past, I know some people preferred the old BetterExplorer icon (the blue and orange one) over the yellow and brown one we have now.

In case someone wants to use the old icon instead, they can do so.

You can download the old icon here: Note: There is a file embedded within this post, please visit this post to download the file.

How to put it into the program

For those of you who aren’t programmers, we have the “How to Build BetterExplorer” page.

After completing step 2, open the folder you created, and you should see a number of folders. Open the BExplorer folder, followed by the BetterExplorer folder. In this folder, you’ll see a bunch of files. Look for the file called “Explorer.ico” and replace it with the old icon. (Make sure it is named “Explorer.ico” or otherwise, no icon will show up!)

If you need more help, let us know.

We were recently threatened by a guy who calls himself “Michael Hardy” . He stole our source code and claimed the program as something he created.

He is well-known on the Internet for stealing (ripping off) open-source code and modifying it (adding in his own credits) plus trying to sell it. ( a search on Google or Yahoo should give enough proof.)

We once sent him a warning about a site of his and now we have discovered a site where he claimed again better explorer is his software. In addition to that, he even edited the credits in the program itself, as you can see in the following screenshots:

A credit page on his (now offline) site:

No comment from me for the last line…

Michael Hardy’s “Better <del>worse</del> Explorer”:

(I suggest running it in a virtual machine – sure is sure.)

And the Beta 1 from us:

Do you Notice a Difference? Well… it should be clear what has been done here.

And, thanks to guys like Michael Hardy, many software programmers stop open-source development. In my opinion, this has to stop. But let’s see. We are not the kind of people who sue everybody just by copying something like rounded corners .

Now, to get some proof about this guy’s movements we have some links for you that you might want to read:

gmc.yoyogames.com

I suggest reading the comments:

youfailit.net ( A series of posts about this guy. It is ridiculous.)

youfailit.net ( as he already posted a comment. Funny somehow.)

Our email chat with this… well *person*:

It shows exactly what kind of person Michael Hardy is. Some comments on youfailit.net also mentioned this.

Enough Talking. Make your own opinion of this.

Our First mail, sent by Dimitar

Hello,

We have discovered that a new site that promotes a fake Better

Explorer is out (http://betterwindowsexplorer.com).

Again, your name is there in writing. If you say you are not

responsible for this, it will be hard for me to believe this anymore.

(Since again, your name, your e-mail, and your information are all on

the website.) This is very much starting to annoy me!

I could believe that the first time was a mistake, but, I doubt it is

possible that it would happen twice since you have already been

informed about it.

We are not fools, but a team of professionals, and we can – and will –

discover any new site or hidden installer that uses our code without

preserving our copyright on BetterExplorer or at least crediting us.

Even if Better Explorer is open-source software, it does have a

copyright that was infringed upon by the mentioned site owner (no

matter who it is).

We have also discovered a hidden installer for BetterExplorer, in a

different website of yours, which again proves to me that you were the

one to put all of this online. (No matter where the installer is put,

you’re still infringing copyright.)

I highly suggest that you close the site, (no matter if are you really

the owner or not. If you are not, you can warn the authorities about

this problem) or we will take measures.

Very often, we deal with that things of this nature (because this is

our profession) so we will take any measures necessary. I give you one

day for this site to be closed.

Believe me and that’s understandable but you should not accuse people without knowing the facts. I have removed the hidden installer

And closed the web site. You are not getting anymore support from me for calling me a liar … In other words, you’re lucky I don’t revoke

This will not happen unless you copy our work again. Thrust me, we will find it (got some nice help by a company, but I won’t go into the details)

You must feel like we should be thankful to you and you got the longer level. False. If it was so, I would not write this mail.

In hope you will not copy anything again,

The Better Explorer Team.

And now his reaction, and with this, i knew it was the person that we were searching for. A liar. It is funny how he declined in his first mail to be the one that is responsible for it.

my comment:

Well… credit cards make you think you have money, so it is no wonder he can say he has $ 60 million dollars and more.

And it is senseless for him to have my IP address. I violated no rights.

The Problem is, he gave us the credit card info. As far as i know, there was no agreement which was signed by both parties. Well, as everyone else, you are responsible where you let and who you give your credit card info.

Previously, our program was released under the GNU GPL. This does not mean everyone can copy it at his will. When you fork something you have to AT LEAST to give credits for it (or you contact the creator(s)). This is what got us mad the most. This guy copied our work without giving credits – he even added in credits to his family members. This means he broke the GPL license that BetterExplorer was under at the time.

Quote (GPL 2.0):

1. You may copy and distribute verbatim copies of the Program’s source code as you receive it, in any medium, provided that you conspicuously and appropriately publish on each copy an appropriate copyright notice and disclaimer of warranty;

The problem is that Mr. Michael Hardy offered us a domain. Now he thinks he is “DA KING” and can tell us anything he wants. False. We have taken measures to secure our work as well as the domain. He has absolutely no access to the data or the server of our site. The only ones having access to this are me and Dimitar.

To all open-source developers around the world: be careful if someone offers you something for free. And be sure to license your hard work.

To quote someone (I don’t remember his/her name anymore:)):

“If something is free, you are not the customer, you are the product“

Think about it.

A little update: I also found a Firefox clone by Mr. Michael Hardy. This is insane.

It it is based on Firefox Aurora, Version 5.0. All credits from Firefox or Mozilla have been Removed –> The license is violated. Mozilla has been contacted about it.

I thought I might take this opportunity to talk about us and our code, and also something else I feel it pretty important. First of all, after a huge disagreement over licenses, we are now under the Common Development and Distribution License, and it will continue to be our license moving forward. However, I cannot stress enough how much we would like it if you credited us. CDDL does require that you keep our copyright intact, but we'd also like to add on a little message of our own. We do a lot of work to make BetterExplorer even better than ever. Those of you who stayed around long enough to remember this project back in the alpha days, you know it was buggy, slower, and didn't have as many features. Since I joined this project last year, we've added many features, fixed many bugs, and now we're at the beta stage. We don't want to see someone else take our work and try to pass it off as their own. It is truly upsetting to see something like that happen, because we have put so much work into it, and we feel like the least we should deserve is a credit when you use our code. So, if you use our code, please credit us. And, as always, if there's ever an issue, don't be afraid to talk to us. Thank you. – JaykeBird

Addition: Please review our custom license terms. You Can review them by reading the license.txt in the source codde/and/or the license you have to agree to at the installation.

I am happy to announce that Better Explorer works successfully on Windows 8 Release Preview. Tested with the public build available from Microsoft site. Only thing that have to be done is to install Visual C++ 2010 redistributable package. The only issue i was found is that Panes section does not exactly work as expected. Everything else works just fine.
